General Purpose

This position works with other line personnel on BED's underground and overhead distribution system, with the primary focus of responsibility on locating underground cables.

Pay Grade 11: $26.58 - $43.57 Hourly

Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote / week

Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for safely and accurately locating BED’s underground electrical conductors (Dig Safe).
  • Assist crew members with switching and tagging within BED’s distribution system.
  • Assist the crews in the safe installation, maintenance and removal of underground and overhead lines, equipment, and apparatus.
  • Respond to and assist in the repair of various underground distribution disturbances.
  • Read, understand, and use distribution feeder maps to locate, install, maintain, and assist in the repair of the distribution system.
  • Build and repair low voltage splices, joints, and connections.
  • Assist with land surveys for determination of boundary lines, assemble field data and make survey calculations.
  • Re-inventory BED's overhead and underground distribution plant and other utility attachments, via pictures and field-collected data.
  • Renumber poles as needed.
  • Locate newly set poles, utility holes, and conduit system via GPS readings of State Plane Coordinates.
  • Inspect BED construction projects performed by contractors to ensure compliance with all applicable rules, codes, standards, and regulations.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • High school diploma with a minimum of three years of experience in an electric utility distribution system, or three years as a licensed electrician.
  • Must possess a cable locating certificate or have the ability to obtain certification.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility standards and the National Electric Safety Code.
  • Must be proficient in the use of underground locating equipment and distribution feeder maps.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of competency in BED’s distribution system and operating techniques.
  • Ability to review, comprehend and comply with BED standards, safety rules and personnel policies, and Vermont Dig Safe regulations.
  • Ability to wear safety equipment will be required (e.g., safety glasses, hard hat, rubber gloves, rubber sleeves, rescue harness, heavy construction boots, hearing protection, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a variety of (extreme) climate conditions required.
  • Must be able to work in high voltage and confined space environments.
  • Must be able to listen to and appropriately react to a supervisor's constructive criticism and incorporate said criticism to improve performance.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed consistent with the provisions of the BED/IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
